Family Support Services

The Family Support Services staff serves over 700 people who have intellectual and related disabilities in Dorchester County. We serve people from birth to end of life. The Family Support Services staff assists consumers and their families to set and reach goals that will enable them to live a full and productive life in their home communities. Family Support Services links consumers and their families to effective cost-efficient resources that will allow them to attain the highest level of independence.

Service Coordination

The role of Service Coordination is to identify, with the assistance of the consumer, family, and others involved, the needs of each individual person and the resources available to meet those needs. Service Coordinators work with individuals and their families to explore options and to make informed decisions. Please call the Director of Family Support Services for more information about the intake, referral and assessment procedures.

Home and Community Based Waiver

Dorchester County administers the Intellectual Disability/Related Disability Waiver (IR/RD), Community Supports Waiver (CSW) and the Pervasive Developmental Disability Waiver (PDD). The Head and Spinal Cord Waiver (HASCI) is administered by Charleston County Disabilities Board. The focus of each waiver is to allow people who require institutional care to remain in their home with added supports. Availability of waiver slots is determined by the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. The services funded are based on assessed needs and cost effectiveness. For more information on the Home and Community Based Waivers please contact your Service Coordinator, Early Interventionist, or Director of Family Support Services at (843) 871-1285.

Respite

Respite provides short term rest and relief for families of individuals receiving services. Respite is provided in the home of the individual and is arranged by the family. Respite services are arranged through your service coordinator or early interventionist. Dorchester County operates a Saturday Recreation activity through our Respite Program. It is held one Saturday out of the month for eligible adults.
